I Can’t Believe I’m Doing This

September 26th, 2005 | by Scott |

I’ve talked it over with the missus. Beginning today, I will train for my first marathon.
Here is the training plan that I am going to be using (modified from Runner’s World)

I ask my running cronies (Jeff, Chris, George) for any insight, advice or pointers you want to share.

My goal marathon is here. What better place than Little Rock for my first attempt?
March 5, 2006. Who is with me?

I’m in, man! I, too, have never run a full marathon. Though I did run a half-marathon - at the first Little Rock Marathon (me and a friend did the 2-man relay) in 2003. You’ll never guess who ran there, too…Denise Coulson.
What about doing the half-marathon in December in Dallas as a benchmark?

    Let’s do it.

By the way, I only expect us to begin together. I have no expectations for anyone to slow to my pace.

Good Luck! Setting your goal is the important part, everything else is more like a training bank account, you just have to keep making deposits greater than withdrawals.

I’ve done six marathons, all of ‘em slow.

Hey Uncle. I think running a marathons a great idea.. And if you’d like to train while you visit let me know. I’d love to go run. Papa showed me your sight - and I like your posts. Also: Ray Lamontagne: Trouble = great album. Tracy Chapman = really?
    Hopefully I’ll start replying often.

The new Chapman album is great. Give it a shot.
I’ll be looking you up with I get into town. Let’s run.

    Scott,
I was hoping you would go there. I finished 4 of the 6 I entered and I remember to this day the jubilation of each finish.
I don’t know that I can do another by next spring but I am going to finish another if health allows.
Here are a few things I learned about marathons:
    1. Having a training schedule is ok but it was not handed down from above.
    2. Listen to your body.
    3. Stay hydrated.
    4. Get heavy duty shoes! My first marathon was New Orleans. At mile 18 I went by a guy limping in the lightweight stuff. nuff said.
    5. Make your longest run before the marathon 20 miles
    6. Go get a treadmill check with your doc.
    7. Stay hydrated….bananas are good
    8. Throw away the watch…walking is good at times
    9. Stay hydrated
    10. Have fun!

CONGRATULATIONS, DUDE!!! YOU’LL LOVE THE EXPERIENCE!!! I like the training regiment…and I chuckled at the use of the terminology “LSD.” Some folks think anyone who ENJOYS running is on LSD.
I like George’s comments as well. One thing I would add — find thick socks! Also…eat lots of carbs the day before your long runs.
    Tear it up!!!
