Health Insurance Question

July 26th, 2006 | by Scott |

Tracy and I are looking at health insurance.  Do any of you have any experience with Medi-Share?

It’s a Christian based non-profit organization where the members share expenses.  It is not insurance.  I’d like some feedback from anybody with any knowledge of the program.

What about other methods of securing inexpensive (or not totally usurious) health insurance?

What’s up Scott…long time reader first time commenter. Dawn and I have had health insurance through unicare for a couple of years, it has cost us 283.00 a month for Us and the 3 kids. Also check out ehealthinsurance.com Hope that helps some, as for Medi Share, never heard of it. I enjoy reading the site, if you are ever in Houston let me know.

Insurance makes my stomach hurt. I hope that you and Tracy find a good one that will take great care of you and your family.

Be very careful and get someone who knows the insurance laws in your state to look at the policy before you get it. I know someone who had insurance thru another Christian based organization for the self-employeed and after his wife was in car accident the insurance said they wouldn’t pay the bill leaving this couple with a huge bill. Alot of these smaller insurances have many loopholes in the coverage. Plus working in a hospital billing office I’ve seen how huge the bills can be and there isn’t alot of willingness to discount the bills. Good luck.

Brian, how are you doing? Great to hear from you. All the affordable insurance options seem to be Unicare. Have you been satisfied with them?

    Scott,

My grandmother is a Medi-Share member and likes it. She recently had a pacemaker put in and there was no problem. It seems to even work well with social security and medicare. My Mom is looking into this as well, as she nears retirement and the public education healthcare system is unreliable.

The only think I would worry about is acceptance of this coverage at medical providers, pharmacies, therapists, etc. Is it an easy process or is there a lot of rigamaroll to get bills paid?

Whatever you do, don’t go for a PPO or HMO. We have Health Net here and have been trying for years to sever benefits from my husabnd’s payroll and be able to choose our own. For our family of 4, we are paying an insane amount of money for coverage that dwindles every year.

They use a network of physicians. I can’t remember the name of the program but our ped. is on it.
It seems like it would be largely major medical though. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, considering.
