You Be The Judge…

October 13th, 2006 | by Scott |

Which one of these songs qualifies as the worst video ever? I love both of these songs, but man this is bad.
The first is Billy Squier’s song “Rock Me, Tonite.” This video effectively killed his career. Hard-rockers in the ’80s did not wear pink tank-tops or roll around on satin sheets.

This next video is from the Boston cast-off Orion! The Hunter. The title of the song is “So You Ran.” Such great acting. It’s easy to discern Barry Goudreau’s guitar playing and I love Fran Cosmo’s voice, but this is awful.

So, what’s your pick? Which one is the worst?

Orion video not bad at least it had a woman in the video.

Billy Squier - well I think that video answers any lingering questions as to his and his bands sexual orientation. Now if you will excuse I am going to take a bath in tomato sauce and try not feel violated after watching that video, and I’m taking my silk sheets off the bed.

I don’t think that Squier was homosexual. But during that time any indication that you were would be career suicide.
His fans deserted him en masse after this.
It’s too bad. I loved his music.
I remember the debut of this video. It was completely out of character for him.
I still love the song though.

Man, I hate the style of the 80’s! Perms, Mullets, and Mustache’s are deadly combo!

My vote goes to song #1 as the worst video ever! The choreography alone is a crime!

Come on, you have to love the mullets.

Another interesting point about the Squier song was that was his biggest hit. Granted, it was his most commercial single.
But his fan base was long gone after this.

I never deserted Billy Squier. I will go back to the office and put his cd in! HOWEVER, I will agree that I could never actually watch the video.

It’s amazing the diffence a video can make on a song. I remember the first time I ever saw one of the Rolling Stones’ video…it made me laugh out loud so hard that I had a difficult time listening to them for a while after that.

Of course being a kid who didn’t grow up with cable (just the basic 3 and pbs), I didn’t even know about MTV until I was 13 or so.

Billy Squier loses because the name “Orion the Hunter” is just cool……..plus, a Boston spinoff gets one freebie in my book.

I always liked Billy Squier but T.H. makes a good point.
It took a few years before music videos really found their footing. There are a lot of missteps out there.
I mean couldn’t Orion the Hunter have used a more expressive dumpee here than Barry Goudreau?
I did love that album, though?

Both of them made me throw up a little bit.

Saw Squier at Barton Coliseum in 84. Ratt opened up. Seems I recall he put on a pretty good show.

I was at that show, Greg.

    Both were worst.

It was just a bad time then. It’s like choosing between the lesser of two evils to me. In the immortal words of Huey Lewis: “Cool is a rule, but sometimes bad is bad.”

But yet Huey Lewis was just so not cool.

I was at the Squier/Ratt show. The first time I saw him was I believe was ‘81 and Nazerath opened. Both great shows. I remember watching that video and cringing. It is just so bad.
I saw Huey Lewis and the News and Robert Cray opened. Also, a great show.
Scott, before they became Huey Lewis and the News they were Clover, backing band on Elvis Costello’s first album.

I hear you Robbie. It still doesn’t make them cool.

Man, I couldn’t make it all the way through that Squier video. Yikes!

Looks like Squier is going to win the crown for worst video ever.
