Pick the Worst Love Song Video

October 27th, 2006 | by Scott |

Billy Squier won the first round fairly convincingly over Orion: The Hunger.
Now, let’s look at two love songs from the 80s.

The first one is Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello.” Is anyone else skeeved out by the way he stalks the blind chick. And she’s his student to boot. And that sculpture! That’s not Lionel Ritchie. That’s Billy Dee Williams.

This next one is Bonnie Tyler’s classic “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Now, I love this song. I’m a total sucker for a Jim Steinman lyric. I don’t even have to know what the lyrics are about. But this video is another story. What’s up with the demon choir straight out “The Omen.” And all the Bo-litas?

You tell me. Which one is worse?

Ok, for one, it’s the blind girl, not the “bling girl.”

Secondly, Total Eclipse of the Heart wins this hands down. Seriously, there is no point in even continuing.

Fine, I corrected my spelling. But how do you know that she doesn’t have any bling?
And I think you are far too kind to Mr. Ritchie. That video is awful.

Those altar boys have lights coming out of their eyes! There’s nothing worse than that!

Doesn’t it seem like a bad horror movie to you at the end? It looks like a cold autumn morning as she’s walking out to meet the students. I get the sense of the calm before the storm.
As if little school-boy Damien is gonna go psycho in the second act.
Or am I reading too much in to it?

The Bonnie Tyler video wins “worst” because its impossible to determine what the heck is going on……honorable mention goes to Ritchie for spawning Nichole - yikes!

Wasn’t there a video to Meatloaf’s “Paradise By The Dashboard Lights?” Seems like there was, and it was sick. Bad sick. Of course, anything with Meatloaf is bound to be.

Scott did you find these vids in a vault of teachers in love with their students or what. Lionel Ritchie’s is the worst video. Nothing like a teacher stalking a student and it doesn’t seem like she’s looking for anyone. The Bonnie Tyler is pretty bad, but the song is awesome so it cancels out some negativity. I do see The Omen in it. Was she in love with one of the choir boys or what. The video didn’t go with the song. I love the song. Oh did I say it was an awesome song.

Jason, there was a video. Meatloaf and Karla DeVito acting out the baseball scene. I still have it burned in my brain. But I’m a huge Meatloaf fan.

Corey, I agree with you. I have to go with Lionel’s video as the worst. I think Bonnie Tyler is having some sort of dream here. It freaks her out when she meets the character from the dream as one of her new students.

Ritchie’s hands down has got to be the worst. Bad song and then the whole creepy stalking teacher/student thing.

I love Bonnie Tyler, though I do have to admit to not really understanding all that’s going on but the thought of some kind of dream does make a bit of sense.

I like both songs and guess you are asking about the videos. Both are fine but I prefer Bonnie Tyler. I have been a fan of hers since she released “Its a Heartache” back in the 70’s.

You mentioned Steinman as the writer which is something I did not know. He is well known as a producer. He produced for Meat Loaf which is one of my all time favorites. I have every Meat Loaf recording ever released including some that were released in Europe but not the U.S.

“A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste is a great Meat Loaf and Tyler song. If memort is correct it was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The original members of the Commodores still reside down the road in Tuskegee. Lionel is rumored to return to this area on occasion.

Yeah, I like both songs. It’s the videos that are so bad.
I love Steinman as a song writer.

John, a dream is the best interpretation I can find. But it’s still pretty creepy.

I went with the “which one gave me the heebeegeebees the soonest” method of deciding the worst video. Lionel had me at the 1:14 mark, right around the “I’ve kissed your lips a thousand times” point in the video. Tyler’s is silly and melodramatic. But Richie’s made me cringe, shudder, and immediately exit my internet browser.

And is it just me, or does he sing with a lisp?

    It’s not just you, Matt.
I agree Lionel’s is the worst. Stalking a blind chick is just freaky.

And stalking a blind chick WHO IS ONE OF YOUR STUDENTS is even worse!

I guess I’m ina the minority here but I don’t think he’s stalking her. Stalking is unwanted and possibly dangerous. He’s just trying to get up the nerve to tell her how he feels, although I wouldn’t call it love. She is a beautiful college student who looks to be in her mid twenties. I don’t think it’s unsettleing at all. If anything I think it’s cheesy.
The glowing eyes in Bonnie Tyler’s video is much more unsettleing. I just watched village of the damned last night and it reminded me of those freaky kids. I still like both songs but Bonnie Tyler’s song is awesome!

It was fun singing along to those. . . If only I knew all the words. I thought that Mary Kay Latourneau was the first teacher to seduce her student. Nope, she just fell victim to the power of these videos. And it is skeevey that anyone would make a video with that theme. Let alone 2 video that’s double skeevey.
