Idea For A New Blog
March 9th, 2007 | by Scott |I’ve been kicking around an idea for a new blog. I know, none of us have time to add another blog to our daily routine. But this blog will save us time and money. Here’s how:
I propose a blog with as many authors as possible to discuss Christian and Ministry related books.
Let’s face it, there are too many books being churned out that affect us as Christians and ministers for us to keep up with them all. In the time I wrote this NT Wright has released two new books.
I, for one, feel overwhelmed with trying to stay up to date with what is out there. I don’t have the time to read everything. And I sure don’t have the fungible cash.
So, how about this: let’s create a blog where as many people as interested can post their thoughts on relevant books that they have read. Everybody involved would be bumped up to full admin level to write their posts and invite others.
It can be in whatever format you want. You can write a review, thumbnail, outline. You name it. Any discussion that your post generates will be contingent on the interest of that book.
This way we can get an understanding of more books without having to read them and we can determine which books are important for us to pick up on our own.
Who is interested? Let me know in the comments. And if there is any web-savvy folks who would like to set the blog up, let me know.

Scott, I think that is a great idea. A place to gather and discuss what we are reading as well as to learn from each other. I don’t have time to read all the books I want to read, so having reviews from you all would be awesome!

I would be willing to offer my reviews, thoughts and opinions.

Alright, we are up to 3 authors. Let’s keep ‘em coming. I already feel heavier in the pocketbook.

I’m in I guess.

I’m interested, but come on, you read 10 times as many books as any of the rest of us…
I can set it up. Unless someone has a better suggestion, I suggest we use the drupal content management system…because I have some familiarity with it. I’m also familiar with Movable Type blogging software, but it may have a limitation on the number of authors for the free version. I don’t know about Wordpress. Regardless, I do know about drupal and it can readily have the functionality of a blog plus more.
I also suggest that we all use Bookmooch (bookmooch.com) to handle giving a book to someone else after you have read it. I’ve been using Bookmooch for a while now and really like it. There are other similar options out there, but bookmooch is the one I use so I’d argue for it.

But Jonathan, I want to read more.
And I also want to be able to skip more books but still have a handle on them.
I’d love for you to set it up. Because I would just use blogger. And I hate blogger.
Other than that I have no preferences other than ease of use for a large number of people.
I’ll sign up for bookmooch.

Sounds like a great idea.

Yep, drupal is good for that. We can have an arbitrary number of users, each with his/her own login info, let anonymous users view but not create items, etc.

Go for it Jonathan. I’ll send you the info of people interested when you get it set up or however you need to get people signed up.

Send me a list of names and email addresses.
Limit it to books, or also include video series (but with a main focus on books)?
Also, let’s pick a domain name…

My key focus would be books but I guess I would leave that to the discretion of the individual blogger.
Something with Christian books in the title or something?

Scott,
Great idea. You can count me in, if you’re taking additional CAC Alums.
