I Need To Start Running Again
September 6th, 2007 | by Scott |Two years ago I was up to 10 miles a pop.
Now, nothing. And I can’t seem to psych myself up to get back out there.
Any suggestions? Surely somebody has the magic words to get me to slip on the Brooks again.
Oh and any suggestions to get me to try and shed this extra 20 would be good too.
Thanks.

The thing that motivated me to begin running again was to sign-up for a road race (in my case a 10K at sea-level next spring). If you’ve never done one they are SO much fun (and you know I’m not just an overly “I-love-fun” guy). I used to do this years ago when I ws running a lot. They always gave me a shot in the arm and you talk about a healthy bunch of people, with “green” as their mantra and environmental causes galore…! It may be just me but it motivates me for the next race. Also, there is a plethora of sermon-fodder about the running of a race, eh…

I agree with Jim. Sign up for a race (actually send in the form and the money). That’s what keeps me motivated.

I think you’ve answered your own question about the 20 lbs. Pull out the Brooks - you just have to get out there and do it!
And remember, it’s like drinking water, when you finally just start it becomes a habit. The hardest part is that first step.
Having a running buddy helps me. Also, taking my dog along makes running much more enjoyable.
Good luck! You can do it!

Make you a deal, I will take the 20 off your hands as long as I don’t have to run.

Shane, the 20 are yours. Do with them what you will.
Amy, you are right. I just have to get out there and feel the successes again.
Jim and Jeff, I have never run a race. Great idea.

Find a fun group to run with at least once a week. I’ve always been a Lone Ranger when it came to running, but for the past year my early Sunday morning run with my 40something posse “Team Wannabe” has been a real shot in the arm, and made me a better runner to boot.
