It’s Time For Houston Nutt To Go
September 22nd, 2007 | by Scott |I’ve been a fan. I’ve been a vocal supporter of Houston Nutt for years. Even in the midst of all of the turmoil and mess over the past year I’ve given him the benefit of the doubt.
I always try to avoid criticizing coaches because I’ve never done it.
But no more. It’s brutal watching the best player in the nation and the best player to ever wear an Arkansas uniform watch his Heisman chances go down the tubes because his coach doesn’t have a clue.
–Continual untimely penalties
–Horrid clock management
–The inability to make the right calls at the end of the game (I mean come on, three runs up the middle with our speed?)
–The befuddling lack of utilizing the best weapon you will ever have?
–Losing quality players
–Losing to Kentucky? I don’t care what they are ranked. It’s Kentucky!
If we want to continue to remain a middle of the pack SEC school who will go to the Liberty Bowl each year, then Nutt is our man.
But we don’t. And he isn’t.

Hey — Lloyd Carr will (hopefully) be available after this season!

Scott,
What’s wrong with middle of the pack? We’re finding it rather suits us.
Sincerely,
Tennessee

My condolences–seriously. We feel your pain–been there.
Even though Bama lost last night, the better team won fair and square, and unlike previous seasons, we now have confidence in the captain steering the ship. Maybe next year you guys will be able to say the same.

I’ve tried to give him the benefit of the doubt in recent years as well, when everyone was calling for his head.
Two weeks in a row they had the ball and the lead and went 3-and-out for no reason. Granted, McFadden was hurt in the AL game, but still - no reason they couldn’t get a first down.
He needs to take Reggie Herring with him. Doesn’t matter how good your backs are, you can’t give up 40+ two week in a row in the SEC. That will almost always equals 2 losses.
On top of that, Duke gave away a 2nd straight win to Navy after being up 11 in the 4th.

Jeff, thanks for the offer but we will pass on that. Actually we don’t pass very well either.
Robert, at least there are some glory days to look back on. Arkansas’ last national championship was 4 years before I was born.
Mike, I doubt that we will open up the coffers quite like Bama did but I will take pretty much anybody at this point. Except the aforementioned Lloyd Carr.
Greg, I agree. Take Herring as well. We can’t stop a fourth string tailback? Come on.

There’s a certain Offensive Coordinator at Tulsa that I would be interested in Arkansas interviewing as Nutt’s replacement. His offense amassed three times the amount of yardage against OU than Miami’s did, and it seems like he has some Arkansas history as well…

What happened Sat? I was flipping back and forth from Bama’s game and thought the hogs were going to kill them. Once you got up after the safety and TD I thought it was over. Then my son told me the score. Wow. I don’t blame you.

I can’t see a Malzahn interview happening. But then again, that is a great microcosm of the issue at large. He should have had unfettered access to play-calling last year. But he, and the rest of the Springdale group, were never fully embraced. And we lost great players and a great coach in the process.
Kevin, what happened was another example of our inability to not beat ourselves.

Could be worse… we could be Notre Dame.

Scott, leaving our parking spot by the stadium and driving down Razorback road, you could sense the hostility among the fans. Casey D. cannot spot open receivers and will only throw into coverage. He came out and the first play, he threw a pass to D.J Williams our CAC standout for 25 yards but never passed to Williams again. Oh well, I expressed my frustrations on my own blog. Also, Nutt’s response in an interview on being booed indicated he got a message.
