Cell Phone Ring Tones
October 16th, 2007 | by Scott |OK, I got my handy-dandy new Razr in the mail yesterday. Now, I have to customize it in such a way that it screams post-neolithic emergentesque preacher type.
In other words I need a new ring tone.
For the past year or so I have used the theme song to “The Office.” I love it. But that’s part of the downside. I have been known to wait until the last possible second to answer because I want to listen to the whole thing.
Any suggestions on ring tones? What would fit in with a guy whose finger is constantly on the pulse of the shifting sands of postmodern missional contexts and structures? (Yes, the verbal assault on the English language and mixed metaphors are intentional.)
What do you use?

I’ve always wanted Donnie’s quote from The Big Lebowski for my ringtone, “Phone’s ringin’, dude”

I got my handy-dandy RAZR the other day too. Thank you by the way for mentioning a cell phone. This is the most high-tech phone I’ve had. As for ring-tones, I have discovered w/ this phone we have, you can have multiple ringtones at once. I have 10 now. I even have your ringtone picked out for my phone, “What I Like about Sundays” The rest of them I’ve just let people pick out what ring they’d like.

The “soothing” voice of Joel Osteen gently letting you know that someone is trying to get in contact with you.

My ring tone is “Back in Black” by AC/DC. My wife says I’m probably the only preacher who uses that song for a ring tone.

I’m partial to the Auburn Fight song but Skynyrd’s “Call Me the Breeze” runs a close second!

My rings are specific for me. You probably remember me using “Eleanor Rigby” in McKinney: “Father MacKenzie, writing the words to a sermon that no one will hear…”
I also use “Flower of Scotland” for my relatives - unoffical anthem of the homeland - listen to these words about the oppressive English:
O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward’s Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
I found O Canada as well.
The general ringtone for me is the Michigan Fight Song: Hail the Victors…
You? I don’t know… Some sort of 60’s protest song by Dylan, Cohen, and the like… or whatever fighting pig song from UA there is…

I have ring tones to identify who’s calling, i.e., my son - a HUGE U of Alabama fan - what else but the Alabama fight song; my daughter, Amy, rings “Amie” by Pure Prairie League; my Russian husband, “Der Kommissar”; etc. My default ring is “Winnie the Pooh” - I’m a HUGE Pooh fan. I can then decide how urgent it is to answer the phone at a particular time.

I just assumed it would be “Chocolate Rain”…

Chocolate Rain. Now we are talking. That’s going to be my one for Tracy since she LOVES that song.

Nothing like “Oklahoma!” or the absolute must…. OU fight song!

Scott -
It just going to be tough to top “The Office” theme song. I used to have the intro to Cold Play’s “Clocks” (just the piano).
I admit, however, that Matt’s suggestion of a Big Lebowski quote is excellent. I might go for Goodman saying, “Shut the f*** up, Donnie!” But that might even get me in trouble.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to do The Office again. No offense, Kayte but I’m gonna pass on the OU fight song
I’ve got “chocolate rain” right now but I don’t think I’m going to keep it.

I can’t even figure out how to set up my voice mail or address book, let alone ring tone! Adam! help me! I’m feeling old.

alright Jonathan. I might have to change mine to firefly.

I’m either going to make my own at this point or go back to The Office.
I’ve been threatened with my life if I keep “Chocolate Rain.”

I’m about a week late to comment so I’m sure the Office theme song is now a permanent fixture on your phone, but I have to put in a plug for my ringtone which has not changed for a couple of years- The Flaming Lips “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots”. I consider it a little post-human nod to my elder sister Jen. Plus I like the little tinkly computer noises.

I still haven’t switched it back to “The Office” but it’s inevitable. It is the perfect ring tone. I must say that the Flaming Lips is an inspired choice though, especially since they just had a street named after them in nearby Oklahoma City, their home-town.
An Emily sighting on my blog. I’m honored.
