Brain Purge

November 12th, 2007 | by Scott |

Yesterday was another tremendous day at Agape. I preached on Philemon with the title “Be Set Free.” Did you know that some have estimated that as many as 60 Million people in First Century Rome were slaves? And the Christian community and their viral approach to ending slavery had much to do with the Empire’s renunciation of that deplorable practice.

One blessing was no Sunday night services. Is there anything more anachronistic that many traditional churches cling to than the Jr. worship services that are typically nothing more than Sunday morning lite? It’s always such a chore to get all three of our girls back to the building on what is a school night. That’s not family friendly. Give me small groups any day.

Tracy and I were able to have a date last night. Some good folks from church took the girls while we went and ate. Ponca City may not have as many restaurants as we are used to but they are high quality.

We have a new web address. Instead of agapecoc.com we will now be agapeponcacity.com. In our advertising we will employ a more ecumenical approach. Praise God for that.

I’ve been to Kansas. I can cross that off my list.

If you are interested in the head coaching vacancy at the University of Arkansas I am accepting resumes. I will then forward them to the new AD.

I’m finally reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. I loved The Kite Runner but, in the words of the great Philosopher Randy Jackson, I’m just not feeling this one, dawg.

I’m hoping to post soon about a utilitarian approach to doctrine. I just have to finish formulating my thoughts on the matter.

Is the state of Kansas as highly overrated as their football team?

It’s hard to hang 76 on Nebraska and be over-rated. And then go into Stillwater and thump OSU. We shall see how they are in two weeks when they go to play Mizzou.

Friendship could hang 76 on Nebraska this year. I ain’t buying Kansas.

I think Fulmer needed that win as much as Nutt did. It’ll be interesting to see if either one survives. I’m thinking Phil will be OK.

I don’t think Kansas is the best out there but I don’t think they are ranked out of place either. I think Iowa State is a W for sure but the Mizzou game in 2 weeks will bear out if they are a legitimate contender or just a very good team in a very strange year.

I think Kansas is for real, but as you say, the next few weeks will tell. I don’t know that they’re national champion for real, but likely top 10 for real. But they have to beat Missouri to prove that.

If they win out and beat OU, either they move up into the top two spots and either Oregon or LSU gets left out (assuming they win out as well), or Kansas doesn’t jump either of them and they’re undefeated at #3 (see Auburn 2004, although at least the two teams ahead of them were also undefeated.)

Of course, if KU falls, then very likely you’ll have at least 3 one-loss teams with an argument, assuming Oregon and LSU win out, and either OU or Missouri win out.

The polls are so ridiculous. Ohio State dropped down quite a bit after this loss, but below several 1-loss teams. If they’d lost 6 weeks ago and Oregon or LSU had lost their first on Saturday, OSU would now be ranked ahead of them (which would be more of a crime since I believe OSU to be a lesser team than either of those two). It’s insane. If you’re going to drop a game, it better be in September.

My fear is that everyone will fall apart here at the end, we’ll end up with only two 1-loss teams, and everyone will say “See? the BCS works!” No, it doesn’t. It sucks.

Basketball, baby. We settle it on the court.

Really? If anything, I liked “Suns” more!

So pleased to hear you’re enjoying your new digs. You deserve it, buddy.

Greg, I agree. We need a playoff.

Matt, it may just have to do with my mood right now and the fact that it’s taking me longer to read it than I am used to.

    Thanks for the well wishes.

There is a great museum in Wichita called The Exploration Place. Highly worth it.

well, I guess Oregon is out. At least for the moment. The way things are going, they could be back in the top 2 by seasons end.
