RIP Dan
December 17th, 2007 | by Scott |I grew up listening to Dan Fogelberg. “The Innocent Age” was on of my favorite albums of the early 80s, full of poignant lyrics. It was “Leader of the Band” that convinced me not to let “I Love You” ever go unsaid to my parents. That has translated to my own family now.
He passed away yesterday from prostate cancer. I didn’t even know he was sick.
Here is my favorite Fogelberg tune “Believe in Me:

I just had to buy his greatest hits. Unfortunately my collection has never made the transition from vinyl.

I was really sad to read of Dan’s passing. Like you, I was unaware of his illness. However, he was on Mountain Stage a couple of years ago, and I noticed that his voice was extremely weak. He could not hit those characteristic high notes. I thought maybe he was just past his prime, like so many singers who made a living singing high notes when they were young.
“Run For the Roses” was one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar. I still have the guitar songbook from that greatest hits album. “Same Old Lang Syne” is such a classic, probably because we have all felt “that old familiar pain.” What a legend.
I only hope that you and all your UCC friends are right about universalism, or that toward the end, he came to a greater understanding of God’s grace, and the free gift of eternal life given by Christ. I always got the feeling from his writing that he was agnostic.
