Top 10 Tuesday: 10 Assertions
January 15th, 2008 | by Scott |I don’t have time to conjure up a good top 10 list and I need some time to replenish the idea pile. Next week I will do the 10 worst movies of all time. In the meantime here are some things knocking around my noggin:
10. I’m growing increasingly nervous about November.
9. I don’t think it’s a good idea to announce from the pulpit that women who have suffered sexual abuse should seek you out for counseling and prayer. Redirecting them to another female might be the more judicious course.
8. The identification of core values is a worthwhile process. If you don’t then your values will always remain at the unconscious level and therefore run the risk of being unChristlike.
7. Godspeed Darren and Felix. You have served us well.
6. Music and Lyrics is the worst film I have seen in a long time. Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore should be docked a movie role apiece for that schlock.
5. If 30 Rock is the funniest show on network TV then Friday Night Lights is the best show on TV.
4. I’m on day 9 of South Beach and have lost 8 pounds. I’m on the Yo part of my Yo-Yo dieting.
3. The Sermon on the Mount is the most popular and least obeyed sermon ever given.
2. I would love to see Brett Favre win another Super Bowl. If only we could hook Eli Manning up with Jessica Simpson for the week.
1. Constantine gets a bum rap sometimes. Augustine is the one who needs a trip to the woodshed.

I wonder if you’ll say the same thing about FNL after watching season 2. Have you watched it yet? They introduced a couple of plot lines that left me shaking my head. Soap operatic ones, to say the least. It’s still good, I just can’t say it’s the best.
For me, nothing holds a candle to The Wire. Nothing. The question I always hear about The Wire is, “How has this show not won an Emmy?”

I have watched all the way through. I forgive it the Landry/Tyra misstep.
I really want to see The Wire but it’s a long wait on Blockbuster.

I with you on all but the bold portion of number one. I am willing to turn the other way if someone wants to take Augie to the woodshed, but Constantine was the first of way too many co-opters of the faith for political/militaristic gains. He may have been shrewd, but he deserves every bash he gets for subverting the Christian narrative and making the cross a symbol of materialistic triumphalism. Let’s put it this way, there would be no Joel Osteen if Constantine hadn’t paved the way!

And the TV show bit, I like FNL, but it’s no Lost or even Pushing Daisies.

I agree that Constantine deserves a good beat-down. And I bash him frequently. I’m even going to take a few swipes at him tomorrow night in my class.
My point is that what did we expect him to do? He was a pagan. He would use anything that would benefit him.
I trace the mainstreaming of Constantine’s militaristic Christianity into the church to Augustine. Constantine co-opted. Augustine made it doctrine.

I started watching The Wire when it was syndicated on BET and then realized that I could check out the DVDs from the local library. You might try that avenue…
