Top 10 Tuesday: Nomination Reactions
January 22nd, 2008 | by Scott |I was supposed to do my list of worst movies ever but I’m struggling with the guidelines: no sequels, b-movies, intentionally bad, etc. I do know that Music and Lyrics belongs on that list. Was that awful or what? But I’m working on it and plan to do it next week.
The nominations rolled out this morning and I was 24 out of 30 on my picks. That’s down 1 from last year. I wish I hadn’t equivocated on Michael Clayton. That was the only one that I missed that I could have gotten right.
Some observations:
10) I’m glad Atonement got a best picture nod. However, without a director nomination it stands no chance of getting the statue.
9) However, with Jason Reitman getting a nom for Juno shows how seriously the Academy is taking this film. It won’t overcome Blood or No Country but it is at least part of the conversation.
8. Sicko gets a best documentary nom. I wonder what Michael Moore would say this time if he won?
7. Best Original Song? The beautiful “Falling Slowly” from Once. Hopefully the three Enchanted songs will cancel each other out.
6. Not much love for Kite Runner or Into the Wild. The Kite Runner suffered from being unable to transfer the emotional punch of the book to the big screen. I did expect more for Sean Penn.
5. Mainstream films are more in vogue this year. Not as many as the more independent art house films that usually pop up. All but There Will Be Blood has opened at a theater near me.
4. Is there any possibility of Javier Bardem not winning Best Supporting Actor? The only scenario is if Hal Holbrook is awarded for his body of work rather than this particular film, a practice that, thankfully, Oscar is moving away from.
3. I would anticipate Adapted Screenplay going to something other than No Country. There wasn’t a whole lot of adapting going on.
2. I don’t have many quibbles with the final tally. I hate that Once wasn’t given more consideration. I think Amy Adams and Angelina Jolie were snubbed. But the biggest crime is no original song nomination for Michael Cera and Ellen Page doing “Anybody Else But You.” Alas, those pesky Oscar rules deemed it ineligible.
1. Let’s hope the writers strike doesn’t threaten this broadcast.

have you (or anyone else) seen Sicko? It was on ppv recently and I was going to watch it, but never got around to it before it rolled off.

Yeah, I’ve seen it. I’m going to get flamed here but I highly recommend it.

He makes good points, like he always does, but his propensity for distorting facts is always an issue with me. I’m gonna watch it when I don’t have to pay him any money. I’ve read plenty of synopsises though.
Anyone that thinks that hospitals for average Cubans are like the place he showed… I’ve got some ocean front property for sale in Kansas.

I’ve heard good things about it and look forward to seeing it.

Justin, is that property you are selling have access to a private beach? I’m just 20 miles from Kansas and would be very interested.
By Justin on Jan 22, 2008 | Reply
Yeah, there is a nudist beach adjacent to it, but I doubt, being a minister, that you’re into that. But hey, you’re a universalist, so who really knows

Michael Moore didn’t show this in the movie did he?
By Scott on Jan 22, 2008 | Reply
No, but it was in Bowling for Columbine.

I agree with the guy that we have problems with health care here in the states. But he does a disservice to his cause when he makes it look like Cuba has better health care than the US. They don’t.
This website has plenty of pictures as well as more videos. I jsut have a problem with a documentary maker, who has a track record of manipulating the facts, deserves any award.

Almost caught up with Jonathan

I really don’t want to get into a discussion on health care on a post about movies but, having seen Sicko, I think the point is that these individuals got better care in Cuba than they did in the states.
I agree that he didn’t benefit his case by going to Havana. He’s a leftist Limbaugh or Hannity in many regards.
But, hey, how about those Juno nominations?
By Justin on Jan 22, 2008 | Reply
I still haven’t seen Juno, cause I don’t have money for going to the movies right now.
But I want to see it pretty badly. Its on the netflix cue all ready.

wait a minute… are you suggesting that I can’t trust Limbaugh and Hannity?
and where are the nominations for “Mr. Bean’s Holiday”???

yer right… Ms. Adams was robbed. Probably wouldn’t have won anyway but still deserved the nod… If the show does happen, at least she’ll get to sing the songs.
