Post Oscar Thoughts
February 24th, 2008 | by Scott |Stewart did a fine job as host. His monologue was spare and on target. I missed the inclusion of nominees and the ability to produce an intro that ties in the major nominees. But working on a tight schedule and the fact that there is only one Billy Crystal weights heavily.
A night of a few surprises. I was hoping for more but you get what you get.
I was glad to see Tilda Swinton win best supporting. I don’t agree with Cotillard for Best Actress but I understand it.
To me the biggest shock was in live action short. I saw all five and I can see without any reservation that the worst of the five won.
It was obvious from Amy Adam’s performance that she was not up for “How Will You Know?” However, I still don’t like the inclusion of Kristin Chenowith. Idina Menzel was in Enchanted and a very accomplished Broadway singer. Chenowith performed on the ABC televised version of the Academy Awards. Is it a coincidence that she happens to star on “Pushing Daisies” an ABC show?
“From Olivier to Danny Day, from Oldman to Tyrone”
Michael McDermott pinned it right 13 years ago. Daniel Day-Lewis has solidified his place as one of the greatest actors in Hollywood history.
When editing when to Bourne and cinematography went to Blood I thought that it might foreshadow the No Country backlash.
But that did not happen.
All in all, the awards went largely as expected with Swinton being the biggest surprise among the major nominees.
The writers strike was acutely felt as there was little scripted patter that really hit during one of the shorter ceremonies in recent memory.
The best news of the night was, of course, “Falling Slowly.” If you haven’t seen Once, by all means rent it now.

“The failed 1944 candidacy of Nadolph Titler….”
Now that was a funny line.

Tracy, I can make that happen.
Matt, you won’t be sorry.
Len, actually it was “Gaydolph” Yeah, that was the funniest line of the night.

I knew that didn’t sound quite right. The line about a woman or black president meaning the statue of liberty is about to get hit with an asteroid was pretty good also.
Didn’t watch the whole show but did get to see the performance of Falling Slowly. It was beautiful. What was wrong with Amy Adams performance? I didn’t catch it.

It was pretty flat. As Randy might say it was “a little pitchy. I wasn’t quite feeling it but it was a’ight, dawg.”

I didn’t think Amy did too badly! Judge for yourself, Len:

Scott, you’d best lay off Amy! Sending her out there to sing that song all by herself just wasn’t the right thing to do. She did fine.

It’s true. All the others (except for the “Once” kids) had a freakin’ entourage out there.

I’m not dogging her. I thought she was “a’ight.” I said that. I’m a fan.

Don’t go trying to make nice now, Scott.

saw none of the show, but did see a “when Busey attacks” video this morning from the red carpet…

I was really proud of Bourne for winning three! I know they weren’t the most impressive three awards of the night, but hey, its something.
One question: would the Cohen Brothers have set the record if they had not used a psuedonymn?

Would have been a tie.

yes, we also loved “Falling Slowly” from Once winning the Best Song - that gives us such a sense of hope, y’know.
