Top 10 Tuesday: Essential Dylan Songs
February 26th, 2008 | by Scott |So, some friends of mine went to see Dylan this past weekend in Dallas and I am monumentally jealous. I’ve been a Dylan fan for most of my life, since I was first entranced by “Like a Rolling Stone.”
So, it got me thinking: what songs would I love to hear Dylan perform in concert if I ever had the opportunity to see him? This list is not necessarily his greatest but ones that I geek over. I can’t comment on these. Who can truly comment on Dylan’s greatness?
10. Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts
9. Jokerman
8. Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright
7. Tangled Up In Blue
6. I Shall Be Free
5. It Ain’t Me, Babe
4. Hurricane
3. Ring Them Bells
2. Simple Twist of Fate
1. The Times They Are A’Changin’
I have to throw in a three song encore as well:
Like a Rollin’ Stone
With God On Our Side
Saved
It wouldn’t get any better than that. What would you put on the set list for a Dylan show?

Great topic, Scott.
The first time I saw Dylan was here in Memphis in the mid-90’s and the song that really brought the house down was, “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.”
If I was going to choose the set, he’d need to include “Subterranean Homesick Blues.”

I almost put Mobile on the list–such a classic song. In retrospect I’m shocked I don’t have a Blonde on Blonde tune.

Gotta Serve Somebody, great. I love Christian Bob.
Blowing in the Wind would be cool. Not essential for me, though.

I would include All Along The Watchtower because Hendrix did an amazing cover… Rocker Bob…

Love “With God On Our Side.” You’ve heard the great Buddy Miller cover, too, I assume?

Nothing from the Traveling Wilbury era, I see. What — no “Tweeter and the Monkey Man”?!?

Can’t go wrong with Tweeter.

I’d like to see a new song, since it’s been a couple years since I’ve seen him. “Workingmans Blues #2″ or The Levee’s Gonna Break.

I don’t get Dylan. He has no voice. My dad likes him and I tell him he can’t sing but my dad says the words are good. Then make poetry!
