Top 10 Tuesday: Sites I Frequent
March 18th, 2008 | by Scott |I was going to name this “sites I can’t live without” but that is a stretch. Instead I want to mention some websites I visit virtually every day.
I used to visit a site called Zap2it. It had the latest entertainment news nicely featured. I had sent them a couple of emails when they had put on their front page spoilers to shows I was watching before I had had a chance to see them. Then this past Friday, before I could see Lost, they had as their lead article the last member of the Oceanic Six. Again, I sent an email pointing out that they could have buried that bit of spoiler-y information through a link. The main editor replied back saying “it’s just a TV show.” To which I responded “and it’s just a website.” Needless to say I no longer visit that site.
These are the sites I find myself going to most often. Note that none of these are blogs and they are not sites in which I subscribe to a feed. These are sites that I physically visit each day.
10. CNN.Com
No Fox News for this guy. This is my go to site for daily news. I do subscribe to the breaking news feed but I find myself returning repeatedly throughout the day to see what is going on in the world.
9. ESPN.Com
Since I shell out the bucks to be an ESPN insider I better frequent this site. I have a love/hate relationship with ESPN. Their columnists and talking heads are typically more enamored with the sound of their own voice then they are reporting sports. However, it is the Wal-Mart of the sports world. If you want the stuff, you have to go.
8. Google Video
YouTube doesn’t always have what I’m looking for. Google, however, pulls from YouTube and a variety of different hosts. If I’m looking for a more obscure music video, for example, I can usually find it through Google.
7. TVtattle
This site is the best collection of Television news in one location. It is updated early each afternoon with a smörgåsbord of insight on all things TV.
6. Bookmooch
I originally joined this book trading site after the recommendation by my blog buddy Jonathan. My hope was to use it as an opportunity to bolster my theology library. That hasn’t worked as well as planned because obscure titles are hard to come by. However, it is a must have for the voracious reader who is always on the lookout for a good book.
I value the work of movie critics. If a movie is universally panned it’s usually for a good reason. This is the first place I go whenever I consider watching a particular film. If the top critics and the regular Joe hate it then I don’t bother. If the top critics hate it and the regular Joe loves it then I enter in very skeptical. However, if both love it then we have a potential winner.
4. Amazon.com
This is where I go for my book reviews. Unlike Rotten Tomatoes, however, it is much more important to be discerning in how you read reviews on Amazon. The reviews, primarily of books, tend to be much more agenda driven.
3. Blockbuster
I was an early member of Netflix back in 1999 and I stayed with them for over 7 years. However, when Blockbuster joined the fray and began in-store returns I made the leap.
2. Wikipedia
Typically has a write-up of anything I’m interested in and, despite allegations to the contrary, it’s usually fairly accurate.
1. Facebook
I’ve been able to connect with people I thought were long relegated to memory. I’ve been able to eclipse a 2000 point rating in Scrabble. I’ve had things flung at me that I never realized could be utilized as projectiles. How can you live without it?
What sites do you frequent?

Gee, Scott, I can’t understand why you do not watch Fox news. This is where you get the real news, fair and balanced.

Totally off topic but I’m not so sure we know all of the Oceanic Six just yet? Are you counting Aaron and Ben? If so, that’s seven. If not, there’s only been five revealed. The writers haven’t said yet if Baby Aaron is to be one of the six which probably means he isn’t. And because Ben has always been on and off the island, we can’t assume he’s one of the six.
Don’t get me started…

I agree, the counting is all off. I’m still pulling for Sawyer (because he’s cool) or Juliet (because she is hot) to make it off. But the ads for that episode indicated that the last one would be revealed. So, I was counting Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Aaron and Sun.

Dad, if your idea of “fair and balanced” is Alan Colmes sitting there saying next to nothing while Hannity spouts off ad nauseaum then I think we might have different definitions of “fair and balanced”

oh, well, there you go. i don’t watch any live TV so never caught any of the ads saying that this past thursday night’s episode would reveal the last of the six. so i’m wondering why the writers have been ambiguous about whether or not aaron is to be counted as one of the six. (i get all my info from a good friend who combs all the lost sites: http://rantroot.blogspot.com/)

Scott, I am just pulling your chain about Foxy news. I very seldom watch them or CNN anymore. I get most of my news from Yahoo. Anyway, I am trying to catch up with Tracy.

Hands down, the coolest website is http://www.woot.com. It has a daily deal, and it ranges from cheap thermometers (today) to good deals on computers and hardware, mp3 players, etc.
