Top 10 Tuesday: What I’m Loving

April 8th, 2008 | by Scott |

I haven’t done a “what I’m loving” round-up in quite a while. This list is in no particular order but is instead a collection of what is on my radar screen at the moment.

10. The Shack–I have heard quite a few raves about this book and 200 pages in it absolutely lives up to all of the hype. A man encounters God at the place of his greatest heartbreak and finds grace and redemption. It is so very rare to see a blending of good theology and fiction. This does just that.

9. Zombie movies–Tracy is ready for this little phase to end but they are just so much fun. And the socio-political commentary that the best of the best contains cannot be overlooked. Here is the best of them all. And yes, that is the entire movie.

8. Great TV comedy–30 Rock and The Office, by far the two best comedies on TV return on Thursday. Almost as good is the one-two punch of The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother. Sheldon makes Big Bang by being the quintessential geek. Don’t miss it.

7. Eli Stone–I mentioned this yesterday but it bears repeating. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows and serves as a good counterpart to Lost on Thursday nights. It straddles the line between cheese and poignancy but I think it usually gets it right. A great show of faith and social consciousness. I’m hopeful for a renewal.

6. eMusic–The best music download subscription service just got better by adding the entire early library of the early Rolling Stones. Each month they add compelling artists and albums. Just this month I have already added the new environmentally conscious CD Coal by Kathy Mattea and the Decemberists’ frontman Colin Meloy’s solo debut. You just can’t beat that.

5. Soccer–OK, I’m not a soccer fan but when my girls play I can see the appeal. Chloe scored 3 goals in her first ever game and added another in her second. She leads her undefeated team with four goals in the first two games. Even better is seeing Cassie run up and down the court (it’s played indoors). She has yet to score a goal but every time she runs she deals her arthritis a crippling blow.

4. Twitter–Yeah, I’m a dork but I’m hooked on micro-blogging. I was just able to follow congressional hearings on my feed while studying for my Wednesday night class. Feel free to follow me at http://twitter.com/sfreeman

3. Brooke White–I know she is not the best AI contender but her choice of songs, sincerity, spirit and style resonate with me. She won’t win against the juggernaut but I would buy her music in a heartbeat.

2. Sports isn’t a total void in the wake of the NCAA Championship Game. (Congrats Terri on winning my bracket contest). At least we have the Masters and the NFL draft before that long cold winter that is the NFL off-season.

1. The Sermon on the Mount–I’m preaching this behemoth of a sermon on Sunday mornings right now. It’s nice to slow down and take it at a pace it deserves. It is the most important and most ignored sermon ever given.

What’s on your list right now?

RE 1: Are you using any materials/books, or just going on your own? I only ask because I’m looking at “Reading the Sermon on the Mount” by Talbert on my bookshelf now. Maybe I should read it…

I’m using a variety of sources. Most notably Stanley Hauerwas’ commentary, Warren Carter’s Matthew in the Margins, the Interpretation commentary by Douglas Hare and Preaching the Sermon on the Mount edited by David Fleer.

I only came over here to make sure that you had admitted a girl beat you. Beat you all!

I’m watching No Country For Old Men. (It takes me days to watch a movie because of a slight case of ADD) What was your take? It’s much meaner than the movies I usually watch. Should I stick it out?

I have no problem admitting it. You beat us good. Congrats.

I liked Old Country but it wasn’t one I loved. I like a movie that has some level of hope or redemption. It was far too bleak for me. With that said, it’s a incredibly well done film. But don’t expect to feel good when it’s over.

Didn’t realize Colin Meloy’s live album was out there. I only have 7 left right now, but after listening to the clips, I’ll likely include that when my dl’s refresh in a couple of weeks.

It was just added today. Yeah, it’s worth it.

I am chaperoning at a youth rally in SLC this weekend and the theme is the beatitudes. I am wondering if the kids will take it to heart.

If you are looking for something to do until NFL starts up you can root for the White Sox!

You can’t beat a good Zombie movie and that is the best of them all. When the first zombie shows up in the graveyard is truly creepy.

Agree with you about the Masters and the draft. While watching the game last night I told my wife that Jim Nantz is having a great week: first then national title game and then to Augusta.

I’m not going to finish No Country. It’s just too mean - I’d rather watch Jon & Kate!

White Sox? Is that soccer :D

Terri, you watch that? Ugh. Tracy does too.

Jon & Kate just confirm my decision not to have children. I guess I just never got the maternal instinct and watching that train wreck every week makes me feel good about my quiet life.

Scott, as a fan of lost you might find this site interesting. He has a big complex theory about the show. time loop theory.com
tell Tracy & the girls hi for me.

Terri, I guess that’s why I hate shows like that. I’ve got my own train wreck. Why watch someone else’s. :D

Mike, good to hear from you. I’ll check it out.
