On Turning 5

Me and Cassie

Cassie,
Today, you turn 5 and I get the blessing of beginning another year of being your daddy. I can never even begin to express the joy you bring to my life.
I can honestly say that I have never experienced more unconditional love than the love you have for me. “Daddy’s girl” does not adequately convey our relationship. I just wish that somehow I could be the person you see. Because of that I am able to understand more clearly the beautiful grace of God.
4 was a hard year. We weren’t always equipped to deal with your frustrations and emotions. It took us a few months to learn that you weren’t just being difficult but that a potentially crippling disease has entered into your little body and caused you great pain. I’m sorry I didn’t realize it sooner.
The process of beginning to treat your arthritis has been so hard for you. You are terrified of needles. It is probably your greatest fear and every week you have to endure a shot. Your mom and I feel your pain each and every time. You will never know how much it hurts your mommy to give you that shot. I have yet to be able to do it. She loves you so much that she has taken that lead.
Despite the pain and challenges you have responded like a champ. No one who looks at you would even know that you have this condition. There are a few signs that we see but they become less every week. And on Saturday mornings when I see you run up and down the soccer field I can’t help but tear up. And I know that we are going to beat this disease.
Cassie, no matter what comes your way know that your daddy will always walk with you. I am your biggest fan and I love you more than my words could ever say.
You are my center child. Have a great birthday.
I love you,
Daddy.
