End Game

May 21st, 2008 | by Scott |

So, I haven’t posted much political as of late. I’ve felt a a major primary fatigue and am ready for the hatred, vitriol and unChristian spirit that we can expect during the general election.

And I’m ready to find out who my candidate will be. And at this point I’m not sure how it could be anybody other than Obama.

I admire Hillary’s moxie and her refusal to quit but not since Belshazzar freaked out over human fingers appearing out of nowhere has the writing been more clearly on the wall.

The final primaries are June 3rd and Obama sits, by his count, 62 delegates away from the nomination. With only 110 delegates left (not counting supers) it is well within his reach. (Sidenote: someone explain to me how Puerto Rico gets 63 delegates)

But, ultimately, the major date will likely be May 31st when the DNC finally decides what to do with those pesky Florida and Michigan delegates. Whatever those revised numbers will be it will most likely come down to the decisions of the remaining 200-odd super-delegates.

Barring some Monkey Business level stumble by Obama, what possible positive end game could Clinton achieve here by remaining. Sure, it is her prerogative to stay in at this point. She is so close herself that to quit with so little to go seems premature. But there has to be a bigger picture here.

According to U.S. News and World Report, Puerto Rico has slightly more delegates than similarly-sized states such as South Carolina because the Democrats are big on welcoming minorities–they love the under dog! The Republicans, on the other hand, give P.R. fewer delegates than similarly sized states, because they eat babies and they don’t have souls (the Republicans, not the Puerto Ricans or citizens of similarly sized states).

I heard a guy on NPR say that Bill Clinton is following the first rule of Husbanding. There are two questions that you ALWAYS say “No” to: ‘Does this make me look fat?’ and, ‘Am I destroying the Democratic Party?’

I’m with you on the whole burn out factor. Lately I’ve been tuning out on all the political talk and such.

As for why Hillary won’t drop out I think it’s just that she can’t accept that she’s not the winner. She just started out in first and thought all she needed to do was show up at Denver and give a nice acceptance speech. So a fight is unexpected and she doesn’t fully know how to respond.

Greg, we do love the underdog.

Tracy, I know Republicans. I’ve been a Republican. You, my dear, are NOT a Republican.

John, I think you are right. But it is time to wake up and smell the McGriddle.
